    Contrary to popular belief, search engine ranking optimization is more complex than just repeating a few keywords or adding meta tags here and there. Optimizing your site involves a lot of work, from optimizing content to correct submission. It is also not a ‘precise’ science. Many search engines change their ranking techniques, so expect the optimization process to be ongoing, and anticipate more than just a few adjustments along the way.

    No secrets

    Don’t be fooled by search engine ranking companies that claim to have ‘trade secrets’ to make your site zoom to the top in just a few days. Fact is, no single formula applies to all Web sites. Search engine optimization techniques depend greatly on a lot of factors such as your desired results and your target audience, to name a few.

    Holistic approach

    The more realistic method of improving site ranking involves a dynamic framework which includes general steps modifiable depending on your needs. The most logical starting point is a review – evaluate where you are now and plot where you want to be. You can then proceed to work in tracking links, and then to identifying keywords. More often then not, you need to repeat these first three crucial steps until you generate the optimum links and keywords.

    After this, you need to combine keywords and then add these keywords to your content. Test run the modified site, and fine tune your keywords as necessary. Submit your page to search engines, check for registration, and see how your ranking improves over the next weeks. Do the whole process over as you introduce new sections and add modules or functionalities.

    There are search engine optimization ‘codes of ethics’ to be followed. Violate them and your site could be penalized, or worse, banned.     How to Begin Search Engine Opmization in 15 Minutes

    Are you ready to hear something unbelievable? It's not that hard to get website traffic from search engines. All you need to do is follow a certain guidelines from major search engines like Google and follow some of my tips here.

    Here are some of my search engine optimization tips for you:

    1) Don't pay a company to submit your website to search engines using an automated procedure because this technique often fails; search engines often ignore these submissions. In fact: Website Submission does not work anymore. You should submit your site to these search engines and directories yourself, or pay someone to manually submit your site. You can also look into search engine advertising (using advertising programs like Google AdWord). Yes it costs money but it ensures placement of your business name and website link in a visible position on the search engine page.

    2) To optimize your search engine ranking (you want to be in the top 10 and preferably the top five), you must understand how your customers think and want. What does he/she know about your product or service? What keywords will he/she be most likely to type into a search engine? Get to know your current and potential customers so you can answer these questions.

    3) Learn more about search engine optimization, even if you plan to work with a web designer. You can find free resources online or buy a book so you can dig into the methodology, find many useful tips about keyword searches and design your keyword references and tags to satisfy the most common words people use to search for your products.

    4) Don't think your work is done after you manually submitted your site to search engines. The fact is, you have just begun! Website success takes time and effort. Even if you are recognized by a search engine, and your ranking is high one day or during a given week, it may slip the following week because of new sites or because your competition changes its site to get a better ranking. You must continually monitor your rankings. That's one of the keys to better search engine rankings

    5) When you are looking at your website and deciding where to use keywords, keep in mind that you can use keywords in graphics ALT tag, but they must be in captions or in the file title, and not embedded under a graphic as a false lead. Of course, don't bother creating a picture or graphic that contains a word (animated or static). The search engines can't index words that appear inside pictures.

    Google Adsense - Don't Lose Your Account

    Adsense is great - yeah? Thanks to our chums at Google, lots of bloggers and webmasters finally have the opportunity to earn real money online. There's nothing spammy or scammy involved, you just host ads on your site or blog and get paid whenever someone clicks on them.

    However, it seems that everytime you visit a forum where Adsense is discussed, there is nearly always someone posting that they lost their Google Adsense account - and the opportunity to earn money online - for no good reason.

    No doubt about it - Google can seem a bit high handed at times - and I'm sure a lot of people have had their accounts terminated who have not, knowingly at least, violated Googles terms and conditions.

    By the way, if you haven't read through Google's Terms and Conditions then you should definitely do this as soon as you can.

    There are some parts where you may feel the need to enlist the help of a lawyer, or possibly a team of lawyers, but you never know, it might stop you getting your account terminated due to some accidental infraction on your part. Like the majority of legal systems, Google operates on the principle that ignorance of the law is no excuse.

    One of the most common breach of Google's Ts & Cs, which can be seen almost every day, is people who are advertising their blogs or sites on traffic exchanges. This is a big no-no for Google - it comes under the category of encouraging a third party to generate invalid impressions.

    Note that there is no necessity for any clicks to be generated by this method. The very act of putting your site, with Adsense code, into rotation on a traffic exchange is enough to get you banned.

    So, if you are one of the many webmasters or bloggers who are using exchanges to drive traffic to your site then either stop it now, or remove the Adsense ads from the page you are advertising. Otherwise you run the risk of losing your Adsense account.

    Adsense Organics

    Contextual advertising works because ads can be woven organically into site content. The beauty of Google's AdSense program has always been its capacity to monetize your website by dynamically inserting ads which are relevant to site content. But to achieve relevance and, for that matter — monetizing — you must develop a sense of organics. Ads should seem like resources to visitors, not ads.

    BLEND THOSE COLOR PALETTES

    1. When you generate your AdSense code, set up ad style and color palettes that match your content exactly. Not just close…exactly. To ensure perfect matches, enter the hex values of your site's colors in your AdSense palette. Match ad head colors to content head colors, ad body text colors to page content body text colors, ad background colors to page background colors. Make ad borders and frames invisible by coloring the ad's frame and background to match the hex value of your page background color. Otherwise, your ads are announcing: I'm An Ad! Visitors will try to ignore them.
    2. Diminish the hue of the link URL to a lighter shade of your body text; e.g., if your ad text is black, color the link URL gray. You don't want to encourage surfers to type the URL directly into a browser window. You want them to click the ad's heading. That's how you get paid.

    PLACEMENT

    1. Organically blended text ads tend to pull better than banners because banners cheerfully announce themselves as ads, which people are subconsciously trained to ignore. But don't discount a judicious sprinkling of image ads because the right picture can be worth a thousand dollars. In our experience, the 336x280, 300x250 and 160x600 wide skyscraper formats tend to perform best. Make banners work with the compositional blocks of your pages, not dominate them. Don't stack banner upon banner. Visitors will scroll right past the noise.
    2. Page length may dictate ad placement. On pages with brief content, placing ads above the content generally results in better CTR. On pages with lengthy content, placing ads near the middle tends to result in better CTR. Readers who are interested enough to hang in, tend to start looking for additional resources.
    3. Use four- and five-link text ad units when you can. But don't compromise page content just to cram more ads on a page. Content, after all, is the point of a website.
    4. Don't create an abominable website around a couple of high-paying keywords and slap AdSense ads in it. Content-challenged, Made-for-AdSense sites never prosper. Visitors will see though your ploy in three seconds. Develop websites which have value.
    5. Don't stick AdSense units in odd vehicles. No pop-ups, 404 error pages, or otherwise empty pages.
    6. Read Google's optimization tips and check the Google visual heat map for suggestions on where to position AdSense ads. But don't treat this advice as gospel. Track your results. Believe your patterns.

    RESEARCH. ANALYZE. TWEAK.

    1. Use filters to block low-paying advertisers. 3 cents a day at $.01 per click is not a living.
    2. Do your keyword homework. The more narrowly focused your page content is, the more likely it is that your pages trigger will ads that your visitors will find relevant. The first lines of your copy are a key factor in triggering which ads will be served on the page. Optimize those lines, if possible, for the kinds of ads you wish to attract.     3. Set up URL Channels in your AdSense account. Channels tell you what's going on with individual pages. Tweak your low CTR pages. Mining can give you ideas for tweaking copy or adding relevant content.

    DON'T CHEAT

    1. Don't tinker with the AdSense code. You could unleash a nightmare.
    2. Don't click your own ads! Google will eventually figure it out. They've trapped your IP address, for starters. Follow the AdSense policies. You'll make more money if you play it clean. I promise.

    Google AdWords - a Good vs. Bad Campaign

    Google AdWords ads connect you with new customers at the precise moment when they're looking for your products or services. According to Google, the Google Network reaches more than 80% of Internet users.

    With Google AdWords you create your own ads, choose keywords to help match your ads to your target audience and pay only when someone clicks on them… this is what is referred to as “pay-per-click” advertising.

    Google AdWords is a perfect way to advertise, if done correctly. Many companies waste hundreds or thousands of dollars every month on “unwanted clicks” that are not truly generating “targeted clicks” for their business.

    Let’s take an example to help paint the picture of what not to do. Say you were a real estate agent that sold commercial real estate only in New Jersey. If you purchased keywords like “real estate” and had them displayed throughout the US, then those would lead to what I refer to as “unwanted clicks”, causing you to pay for unnecessary visits to your site.

    What should be done is this; first, the keyword “real estate” is too generic and does not specifically describe your service of selling “commercial” real estate. Secondly, you should only have your ads displayed for New Jersey Internet users only since this is the only state in which you sell commercial real estate. A much better version of this would be to purchase a keyword like “commercial real estate” and setup your ads to only display in New Jersey, hence leading to targeted clicks.

    Does this make sense? The overall goal of Google AdWords is to direct “targeted clicks” to your website and that is how you should look at it 100% of the time. The goal should not be to acquire as many visits to your site as possible but instead, to acquire the best quality of targeted clicks. As I stated before, Google AdWords is pay-per-click advertising so you should only focus on having keywords that will direct “targeted clicks” to your site, this way you pay for these clicks and not the “unwanted clicks”.

    If done incorrectly, Google AdWords can cause you to unnecessarily spend precious marketing dollars. But if done correctly, Google AdWords can allow you to open your doors to a whole new means of selling your products and services online.

    Google AdWords is a must have in your arsenal of advertising campaigns. So be sure to focus on your product and service and fully analyze what your target audience will be searching for on the Internet. This is what should be your list of keywords…. It’s that simple!

    If you have been looking into Internet marketing, you have probably seen Adwords mentioned now and again. Why don’t we cover the basics of the program.

    Adwords is the name of the pay-per-click system offered by Google on its search engine as well as search engines it supplies advertisements to on the net. Sort of anti-climatic, but I couldn’t think of anything more dramatic.

    In the world of Internet marketing, search engine optimization is the best way to make significant sums of money. Bidding is a subject unto itself, but that is essentially how the process works with Google Adwords.

    There are a couple of downsides to Google Adwords. My biggest pet peeve is the size of the ads. You are allowed very little space, so qualifying traffic before they click your ad is pretty difficult. Click fraud is the second area that gets people hot and bothered. Essentially, you just have to accept that a certain percentage of clicks are bogus. I have problems with acceptance [a few girlfriend can verify that], so I try to get organic rankings as quickly as possible.

    Overall, however, Adwords has definitely proven to be the best platform for me. Some hate it, some love it. You don’t have the right to rant one way or the other until you try it.

    Lemmings are cute, but dumb. If you tell them to jump off a cliff, they will. Just like the people who start blogs because everyone is doing it. Guess what happens after a little while? The blogs die.

    In managing a list of many Web sites, most of which are blogs, I deleted countless sites from the list because the sites and blogs no longer existed. The people ran out of steam or had no reason to start them in the first place.

    How do you know when a blog is right for your business? Learn why people start blogs, how they find their niche and how blogging tools can be used for more than blogs.

    Some people like to read blogs, others like to read newsletters, still others like to rely on feeds and some read a few or all of them. No matter the method the information is distributed, each medium has one thing in common: content. Having a blog connects your newsletter and your business with all of these readers and delivers important content in a particular style.

    I've been blogging since June 2000. If you review my early blog entries in meryl's notes, you'll notice they're more personal. When blogs first hit the scene in the late '90s, they were personal diaries and journals. Like the blog business, my blog has transformed from personal to business speak, although I still add personal notes here and there.

    A few bloggers tend to talk about their work, their products and their little world. That might work for celebrities where fans want to know everything about them, but it doesn't work for the average business person. Other business people want information on how to succeed and when a blog spends time hawking products offering information of no value, few people will return. The people whose products sell well are the ones who provide valuable information. Readers already know what kind of information they're getting, so they trust that when they buy something, it will be of the same or better quality. This value must be reflected in their blog. It's much like people who only sign up for a newsletter after first seeing an example.

    No one wants to be a lemming (I would hope). How do you decide whether or not to set up a blog? The answer isn't black or white (what did you expect?). Ask these questions:

    • Can you regularly update it — at least five times a week?
    • Do you have something to say other than just linking to others?
    • Do you read other blogs or feeds?
    • Can you provide information of value to others not just to yourself?
    • How large is your newsletter subscriber list?
    • How many unique visitors do you get on an average day, week or month?

    The big decider is whether or not you can write in the blog almost daily. The people behind the high traffic blogs post multiple times a day. Though resourceful, merely linking to other sites doesn’t give visitors much reason to make the effort to come to yours. Reading other blogs or feeds is a great way to learn how to carry a discussion. Find other blogs covering topics similar to yours and check them out. Disagree with their opinions? Write about it and explain your reasons. Cross-blog discussions are common, and that's where trackback comes in handy.

    Trackback is a blog feature. If you decide to comment on another blog posting in your blog instead of in that blog's comments page, then you link to the conversation through the trackback link. Trackback is similar to the permalink, the permanent URL for the blog entry, but it has a different URL for copying and pasting in your blog's trackback box.

    Aside from the technical aspects of operating a blog on a daily basis, subscriber list size and Web site traffic are good indicators of what kind of reaction you'll get when opening a blog. Starting from scratch with little traffic means you have a long road ahead and lots of work to do. There is no magic formula anyone can sell you for $97 to make your blog an overnight success. But with some perseverance and ingenuity, your blog can engage many prospects and clients.

    Considering there are numerous blogs out there, pick a niche topic when starting a blog for a better shot at attracting and keeping an audience. meryl's notes focuses on three areas: webby, geeky and wordy. In reality, this is too much. What I need to do for my readers is create three separate blog entry points, so those interested in writing, newsletters and Internet marketing get nothing but the wordy entries. Those interested in Web design get the webby stuff and the technophiles receive the geeky content.

    I also manage a personal blog separate from meryl's notes. It's about cochlear implants and deafness. This could fall under the geeky category, but it's a personal blog and doesn't belong in meryl's notes. This blog is written for a different audience.

    The blogging tools for both of my blogs come with syndication capabilities so those using feed readers or aggregators can read the content through the software. When sending a new issue of a newsletter, comment on it or link to it in the blog, that way the blog and feed readers will get the goods, so all three bases are covered.

    Blogging tools aren't just for, well, blogging. Such tools are an excellent way to help you update your Web site more often than you otherwise would. I use it to manage the list of tableless Web sites. Using blogging tools is much easier than the way I managed it before, updating the HTML files by hand. Though using a blog tool, it isn't a blog. In this case, the blog tool has become a content management system (CMS).

    Small business owners don't have a need for the fancy and pricey CMSes out there. They find it easier to use blogging software to manage their sites or hire someone to adapt the tool for their site.

    Blogs have found a place in businesses and people are finding creative ways to use them. Some companies have a blog on the intranet for communicating project status, jeopardies and metrics. They’re used for knowledge management. With information pouring in, blog tools provide a way to share, organize and process the information.

    Being a follower can be good or bad. No one wants to walk off a cliff with the lemmings, but everyone wants to succeed. Best practices won't help, since the decision to blog is based on the organization's mission, needs and goals along with its target market's desires and needs. A blog about lemmings? There is one, sort of. Or maybe you’d like to start your own and talk about dumb business moves.

    Best Blogging Software

    The blogging platform wars are getting really interesting and much of the discussion I find myself in lately revolves around what is happening with various CMS systems. The market can essentially be defined into 3 major camps: remotely hosted, self hosted, and community based systems. I have used pretty much every blogging platform available and each of them has its ups and downs. In this article I will cover the best options for each area taking into account price, usability, market share and of course SEO potential.

    All of these products are either open source, completely free or have a functional free version. Links were stripped from this article so you may want to check out the original best blogging software article at ProfitPapers.

    Remotely Hosted Blogging Software (Note: I cannot really recommend any of these from an SEO stand point as optimizing a domain you do not own or control is obviously not a good marketing plan.)

    Blogger

    Blogger is completely free and currently owns the majority of the remotely hosted user base, but not by a land slide . Bought out by Google in 1999, Blogger essentially fired up the blogging trend we see today. It is by far the easiest overall solution to use and if you are a novice user looking to throw up some recipes or poetry, this is for you. Blogger is completely free and includes some great features like comments, photo blogging, and a basic community feel with user profiles. Because it is so dumbed down there are some features you may not find with Blogger that are only available through 3rd party add-ons. As a side note Blogger weblogs do quite well in the search engines and this was recently exploited with it being the first choice for spam blogs or splogs. A splog is a weblog used for the sole purpose of gaining inbound links or generating thousands of keyword stuffed pages with Adsense and the like. The recent Google Jagger update cleared a large portion of this up. Free.

    Typepad

    Released in 2003 Typepad is a product of Sixapart, the makers of Movable Type. it is largely based on MT but there are some major enhancements and differences. Your blog can accomodate one or more photo albums with auto thumbnail generation. You can easily add music, books, and other media to Typelists, which grab a thumbnail from Amazon and other retailers for easily displaying in your sidebar. Typepad is also a great deal more technical than Blogger so a bit of HTML know how is recommended. On that note editing your blog to look the way you want it also quite easy and Typepad blogs are known for being very eye pleasing, intuitive and easy to navigate. In Sixapart's business model Typepad is aimed at regular home and small business users while Movable Type is targeted at larger businesses or for internal intranets. Price: Basic, $4.95 a month; premium, $8.95 to $14.95 a month.

    Xanga

    These guys originated back in 1999 as a site for sharing book, music and movie reviews. Although it quickly morphed into a full blown blogging tool Xanga still maintains the ability to run a powerful review site. Xanga pulls data from several retailers like Amazon.com including thumbnails, pricing and a cover. The software also is very usable by novices with a powerful WYSIWYG editor allowing for easy HTML editing, adding smilies, links, and other symbols. By using Blog rings it is also easy to interface with Xanga's other 3 million users to share interests, ideas, and of course traffic. Xanga comes in a free and $25 flavor.

    Self Hosted Blogging Software

    WordPress

    WordPress originally began as a mod of an older open source package known as B2. WP is MT's biggest competition and is often the bain of endless Wordpress vs Movabletype style threads around the internet. Although launched just over a year or so ago WP has really taken the blogosphere by storm. And with good reason - Wordpress is completely free under GNU licensing and is packed with many featured you will not find anywhere else. It is also much easier to install and get blogging for novice users and has a very large and helpful community. WP runs on PHP/mySQL and is quite scalable judging from some of the very large and trafficked sites I see using it. It also sports utilities to import files from Movable Type, Textpattern, Greymatter, Blogger, and b2. Wordpress recently upped the ante when Yahoo recently included them on their hosting packages, in addition to MT. I have to admit I am finding myself more and more digging WP and will likely convert Profitpapers to WP as I get time (it can be a biznitch). Wordpress is free.

    Movable Type

    Aside from maybe Greymatter (the original open source blogging tool), Movabletype dominated the blogging market share in 2002-2004. Released in late 2001, Perl based Movable Type by Sixapart has maintained a large portion of the blogging market share, due mainly to the fact that there is a free version (supporting up to 3 weblogs) and that it is incredibly powerful, intuitive and easy to customize. Template driven Movable Type also sports one of the largest communities of developers and blogging enthusiasts around, meaning lots of support, idea sharing, and of course plugins. Movable Type can be configured to dynamically generate HTML, PHP or any other kind of pages you like, meaning it is incredibly scalable, fast, and loved by spiders. It is perhaps the most well known blogging software for SEO purposes and it what currently powers Profitpapers and several of my other projects. Moveabletype is either Free with 3 authors, 1 weblog, and no support or $69.95 with unlimited weblogs, authors and full support.

    Textpattern

    Textpattern is the brainchild of Dean Allen and was written to ease publishing of content for those not inclined to learn HTML. Like WP and MT Textpattern runs on PHP and mySQL for easy administration, backups, and power. What really sets textpattern apart from the others is the integration of Textile. Textile is a tool for easily formatting content for those who do not know HTML. WP & MT have modules for textile as well but it is native to the Textpattern system. Another bonus of the app is its superior handling of comment spam due to its smaller market share. On a blogs I maintain running WP and MT I often find myself clearing out spam every day, whereas on some very busy textpattern sites I receive only manual comment spam (not bot driven). TP is open source.

    Community based Blogging Software

    Slash

    Waaaaay back in 1997, Rob "CmdrTaco" Malda launched a website known as Chips & Dips, supplied via his student account at Hope College in Michigan. In 1999 Andover.net acquired Slashdot. Shortly after, the underlying code was released as open source software called Slash. Like Movable Type and Greymatter, Slash runs on Perl, but it also has established hooks into MySQL and a very strong track record of scaling to enormous traffic levels. To give you an idea, the term 'slashdotted' originated from acquiring a link on this now infamous and very popular tech news website – and consequently watching your servers melt. If you have never messed around with Slash, you really should as it is quite a powerful platform. Slash is open source.

    Scoop

    Another well known Perl based community blogging software is Scoop. Scoop is the software that powers Kuro5shin, DailyKos and many other busy community weblogs. Scoop took the Slashdot idea and expanded on it, making the discussion rather than the news the focus of the application. Where Slashdot entries tend to have a link with added commentary pointing readers off the site, Scoop points to stories written by members of the community keeping the reader within your own weblog. Scoop is also well known for handling large volumes of traffic and a large very technical community. Scoop is free .

    Drupal

    Drupal is a well known open source community blogging platform with a very large community of users and developers. Not only is Drupal free but it is damn powerful. Instead of Perl, which is quite hard to decode at times, even if you are a fluent coder, Drupal uses a PHP/mySQL platform. Drupal is also a very community focused application with a built in forum, download area, and hundreds of other home brewed mods and hacks. If you are looking for a lot of functionality give Drupal a check - the project has become quite mature. It is also much easier to use and customize than either Scoop or Slash. Drupal is also another open source project.

    Why You're Not Blogging - And Why You Should Start Today

    Those of you who aren't ready to wade into the Blog pool are taking your time for several reasons, according to my informal interviews with people before and after they blog. Others start blogging and then abandon their projects too soon, unaware of the benefits.

    Whatever your reason, you should get started now - or get back to blogging as the case may be. Here’s some motivating enlightenment that you may find surprising.

    Reason # 1 that you aren't blogging - You don't realize how huge the benefits are, and how much they may outweigh any monetary or time costs involved.

    I think number one may partly the fault of people like me, who have a foot in the marketing arena, and don't explain the idea in detail.

    We tend to tell you how great blogging is, but we don't tell you why, or better yet, show you. Or we tell you how to get the best results with your blog, but don't tell you where to start. Let's talk about some of the basic facts.

    If you've ever dreamed of going from getting 10 hits a month to getting a few dozen visitors a day from search engines, blogging can make it possible, if you do it right. The structure of a blog, and the fact that most of them automatically generate content feeds, also make them the best food for your friendly neighborhood search engine spider.

    If you would like to have visitors come back to your site over and over again, until they buy, you may want to be a blogger. An informative blog that engages your audience shortens the sales cycle. It also creates a courtship period. They can subscribe to your thoughts, see if they like you, even get to know you a little.

    People buy from people they like. I don’t remember who said it first, but I’ve learned that it’s the truth.

    If your visitors don't feel like they are getting a personality vibe from you, they are often less likely to buy. Vibe = buy. Remember that, and that blogs make it easy for you to vibe.

    If you'd like to create new targeted search engine pages for your site without needing to hand-code a new page, or fire up your HTML editor every time, you may enjoy blogging. You log in to your blog admin panel, type your thoughts, proofread, press publish.

    Presto. You’re a blogger.

    If you'd like free one-way links back to your site that contain your lucrative keywords, blogging helps with that too.

    Even if you've made a mess of your SEO efforts, or been the unsuspecting victim of an algorithm change, as long as you aren't banned by a search engine, blogging can help bring you back into top results. Because they have a search engine friendly architecture, and can make use of your keywords automatically, without being gratuitous, they are an easy way to get into a search engine and stay in.

    Reason #2 That you aren't blogging - You think it's hard and expensive.

    Granted, especially if you're busy, or have a medium sized to large business, it may be in your best interest to hire one of the few consultants that works on these types of issues.

    But if you're a small business owner or home business owner with an online element, you can get away with firing up a free blog and paying for an inexpensive custom template if you can't install one on your own. Most blog consultants will do all the keyword research, etc for you, so that all you'll have to do is log in and blog.

    Many of the most common blog software systems are free or inexpensive, especially when weighed against the cost of only using paid methods to attract visitors.

    Reason #3 That you aren't blogging - You don't think of yourself as a writer.

    Not only can you get away with a few paragraphs, you don't have to write in professional-speak, or use industry jargon to blog. By nature, blogging is done in a casual, conversational tone.

    And your blog posts don't have to be long article-type entries like mine are. I'm used to writing articles, and I'm just naturally verbose. My audience is used to my mini-brain dumps, just as your blog readers will likely be happy with, or adapt to, whatever your style is. Your audience will be thrilled with a few paragraphs every day, as long as they’re informative and consistent.

    So take the plunge. Start blogging today. If you’re already a blogger and didn’t see the benefits the first time around, try making it a part of your routine - and have a little fun. Give it time to work for you.

    Blogging: A Start-Up Guide

    Blogging is so easy that you probably do not need a start up guide, but for those who have blogaphobia, I am doing this.

    1. By reading this you are half way there. This is a blog style post.

    2. If you post, you are blogging to an extent.

    3. If you take my advice and get a blog, you are a blogger.

    4. If you sell anything, or create money trail, you are making money blogging.

    Now that I’ve bored you with a list, you probably want something good. I’ll give it to you. If you have never blogged, this little start-up guide is for you. If you have blogged, maybe you just need a refresher course.

    Anyway, you probably want to know how to blog. You know what blogging is and you know you can make money with it. What you may not know is how you start.

    Well, it’s easy. Choose a provider. Make sure it’s someone who has the up-to-the minute programming so you don’t look ancient.

    Create an account –Then, start writing! Alas, you are going to say “exactly HOW do I just pop into the blog and write?”

    It’s not some horrid thing where you have to have a book next to you figuring out designs and codes. For the most part, there are layouts you choose from and often you can even pick colors of fonts and such. It’s like decorating a living room, only this is a living room about 12 million people could possibly visit. So make it look nice!

    You don’t have to have software usually or anything snazzy. You simply pick a design or layout and create a look or image based upon choices that you’ll be prompted to make.

    Is it an article, a column? What the heck IS a blog? As mentioned before, in another article -blogs are actually entries. It’s like a diary or a journal. You simply write, but note – that whatever you do not want the world to see, do not write. After you write your entry, you will be asked to publish or post it. Once you do that you still can often, go in and edit or delete it. You will usually give your blog a title. You type your entry, which you may call “blog” or “Content” and away you go. You’ve just blogged.

    Sometimes, you allow (or not allow) the public or a select bunch you’ve invited to make posts or comments to what you have written. This makes for fun if you do allow it but sometimes it can be downright harsh. There is usually no screening on posts unless you specifically in your template and choices make sure no one has potty mouth or gossip mouth. The way to do this is to be a moderator, or to even hire a moderator. This way, all posts first go to an email address (they have no idea) and you or someone with some degree of ethics and standards, will edit, delete or allow the post to go through. That personally is my advice; don’t let downers, potty mouths or idiots post on your site unless you are really sure that you will attract only a top-notch crowd. Since blogs are often public places – think of the blog as a public bathroom. Only let the people in who flush and wash their hands. This is an especially nice feature also for control freaks.

    Do I have to be youngish? Hip? Can I be a boomer or older than dirt? Anyone can blog. There is no set rule of thumb. It used to be hip kids, journalists and maybe a select other few who did it. Now, you have grandparents who blog and let their kids blog also – and grandkids. It’s a great way to keep the family as a unit if you keep everyone together, you know?

    Blogs are special. They are unique. They are really nothing more than a public diary or journal – where a web site is all about people going to the site and just staring at it, a blog is all about saying, “Come on in and sit a spell” – which is why you will find that blogs tend to be more upscale, than say, a chat room or chat board. Blogs are the welcome wagon of the internet. Chat rooms are like a seedy bar. Chat boards are like hospital waiting rooms where people sometimes share doom, gloom and gossip. But Blogs are really usually positive. Sure you will have that negative blog here and there – but a decent blog owner will beget decent posters for the most part.

    It is a small world. So, when you visit a blog, or when you have a blog – expect people to comment online. It’s a diary where people will actually say – “this is cool, and I want to be a part of your life and share this with you” and…they will! If you allow this in the template, you will have comments that agree, disagree or just share. You may have folks promoting themselves, or you may have cheerleaders supporting your blog. Either way, it’s a great way to make friends and yes, make money if that’s what you wish.

    You need to realize that your blog could and very well may be found on the net during someone’s search. For instance, if you have certain tag words in your blog, or it’s just plain popular, a key word search could turn up your blog. It’s the net, and it’s public. Blog smart!

    Blogging is for you, even if you think it isn’t. You may think you are not a writer. So what? First of all, if it is a personal blog meant for only a few folks, and you don’t care that you are not a thespian of the paper, then don’t worry about it. Also, you don’t have to be a super-duper writer at all. Even if you are a writing savant, you certainly at least have an opinion, correct? Voice it through blogging! You also probably have a passion such as gardening, cooking or fixing old cars…that a bajillion people also have, that you could talk to and share with. Again, you can make money. If you like gardening, you may want to think about selling seeds, or dried lavender from your garden, or renting ad space or a few thousand other ways to make money. Maybe an online course where you teach the power of planting? As long as you have passion and ideas, there will always be possible ways to make money that are fun and proactive.

    Blogging is absolutely one of the most easy, fun, economical yet possibly financially rewarding hobbies you can start for yourself.

    Making Money with Blogging

    The digital pioneer, as he is often called, Clement Mok had it correct when, a few years ago, he said, “Five years ago, we though of the Web as a new medium, not a new economy”

    We live in a world where not only the Inernet, but blogging can make increase your profit line. In the 90’s, in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, a young man by the name of Justin Hall became one of the pioneers of what is now known as blogging. He began an Internet journal, and quite honestly, this is how Blogging was born.

    The technical description of blogging is “Weblog” according to most dictionaries and anal people. Usually the blog can be anything from commentaries to diaries, and can contain links, photos and more.

    Here is how to make money by using Weblogs-

    First and most importantly, get a web log! It is really easy to do.

    You can do this by doing a quick search and you will find that there are free, yes, and free blogs. It’s easy, fast and fun to get one. Two of the most popular are:.blogger.com and www.livejournal.com, however do a search as there are many to choose from.

    Google Adsense: This is another fantastic avenue and you virtually do nothing in exchange for it. Hit in any search engine, preferably Google, “Adsense” or “Google Adsense” and then follow the easy, fruitful way to net money making. It’s really that easy. [https://www.google.com/adsense/]

    This may sound too easy, but simply ask for money. It’s a simple concept really. If you have like, a hundred people looking at your charismatic prose every week, or say, more, then if you guilt them into giving you a dollar for each time they view, that’s, well, at least a hundred dollars. You have to be forward and guilt them. It has worked in the past. It can work for you.

    Don’t overlook the obvious, and sell something. You can sell a product or service - on your blog, you can sell whatever you want. I know a ton of people, myself inclusive, use [ www.cafepress.com] Café’Press. Basically, you choose what you want to sell; you design it online in about four seconds, and poof! Like magic you are selling personalized stuff. Everything from coffee cups to T-shirts. You choose the mark-up and you make the money on whatever you marked up. Banner advertising is also a great way to make money. You charge others for the banner to be on your site and you do nothing. It’s like web slum lording; how fun is that!

    Think of blogging like any small business. Research and know what you are doing. Don’t blog if you hate computers or typing. You must have a true Internet interest. You also must blog about something you really enjoy or, yourself – but only the latter if you want to gather (or have enough) friends, family and networking opportunities to get the ball rolling.

    Have the passion in your life explode on that blog. Start piggybacking banners, ads and some sales opportunities within the blog. Ask for money. Ask for donations. Have a membership mailing list that people pay for. Do what ever it takes to generate interest and charge for it.

    Blogging isn’t old but isn’t new. A set of rules does not exist to a master plan of making money, and so far, I haven’t become a bazillionaire off of blogging myself; but I do know this. – that if you are interesting (or think you are) and have the guts and determination to make a business out of blogging, you may just be a thousand dollar blogger.

    Blogging for Money

    While most of the bloggers don’t care about money, but about exposure, there are some making pretty decent earnings with blogs. The question is: how much? Well, that depends on the method used by the blogger, the traffic he or she can attract to the blog, the value of the post and so on. If you are willing to win some money with a blog, there are a few possibilities.

    There are various ways to make money from a blog: advertising, including the famous ads by Google (AdSense), affiliate marketing, the controversial pay-per-post current, the actual blogging job and donations:

    1. While AdSense is not so difficult to master – all you need to do is insert a code provided by Google into the HTML of your blog and Google will display on it ads related to the content. Each click on the ads will bring you a few cents. High value keywords may even bring you larger amounts. Google is not the only pay-per-click program provider. Even Yahoo! has a similar plan. It’s up to you what you choose.

    2 To win money trough affiliate programs requires more efforts: you need to place links to merchants. These links should be appealing – to determine visitors to take action. And writing “sales links” is not such an easy task.

    3. The third method is known as pay-per-post. Many advertisers are willing to pay bloggers to post advertisements or news on their blogs. The purpose is to build traffic and gain back links that will boost their search engine rankings. There are plenty of online firms offering such an opportunity to bloggers. Some examples of sites where bloggers could make money blogging are: http://www.weblogsinc.com/, http://www.soulcast.com/, or http://payperpost.com/.

    4. Firms are looking to hire professional bloggers. There are already job portals for bloggers on the Internet and job postings for bloggers on many websites. If you are looking for a blogging job check out Problogger: http://www.problogger.net/ and the blogger jobs board you find onsite.

    5. A less popular method is used by bloggers who ask their readers to “donate” some money to help them keep the blog going. It may come as a surprise, but many visitors do act on such requests, especially when they find something really interesting and they enjoy reading the blog

    These four methods are what bloggers call “making money with a blog”. Professional bloggers know a more effective method: “making money as a result of a blog”.     Converting a web template is fairly easy if you take the time to learn how to do it. I wrote this guide for someone like me a few months back -- eager to use a great looking web design and yet not knowing how to start converting it to work with WordPress.

    The guide includes tips on where to get templates one may use for conversion. The steps are basically as follows:
    • Organizing the theme/template files

    • Finalizing the design of the template

    • Marking up the template for later reference

    • Cutting the design into the different WordPress theme parts

    • Adding the WordPress theme elements

    Max also made a tutorial video available, which may appeal to you better if you're more visually-oriented.

    Probably getting tired of the usual "top ten" list type posting, Steve Rubel posts his A to Z of making money through your blog. Of course, having only one entry per letter makes it a bit limited, but because of this I suppose Steve has only included what he thinks really matters.

    And here are my favorites.
    • Events. There's nothing like going outdoors and smelling the fresh air. For a problogger like me, staying cooped up at my home office can be quite stifling to creativity.


    • Quit your day job. Not for the faint-of-heart. Quitting your day job helps you get new perspectives on life (and money) and would probably force encourage you to ramp up your earninbg capacity or business model from blogging.

    • Zzz (earn money while you sleep). I'd say this is probably the best thing about problogging. If you're entrepreneurial enough, and if your business model for your problogging activities includes passive income, then congratulations!
